I love reading books about creativity, the creative process and how we generate and develop new ideas.

I read a lot of books and I have put together some of my Top 10 creativity books. Here are some of the creativity books from my list:

In this episode of The Creative Life TV Show, I put together a 'give away' where you could win my Top 10 creativity books. All you have to do is go to www.jamestaylor.me/giveaways/creativity-books/

Transcript:

When I talk to creative people and ask them to describe their goals in their career and work, they often describe it to me in very vague way. More like dreams rather than goals.

When setting goals we have the  S.M.A.R.T, P.U.R.E and C.L.E.A.R goals.

S.M.A.R.T stands for S- Specific, M- Measurable, A - Attainable, R- Relevant and T-  Time based.

P.U.R.E stands for P - Pure, U- Understood, R - Relevant, E- Ethical.

C.L.E.A.R stands for C- Challenging,  L- Legal, E- Environmentally Sound, A- Agreed, R- Recorded.

The more of these components you can pick off when you set a goal and write that goal down, the more likely you are to achieve it. You have to know clearly in your head what that goal is and how to define it.

Chantel McGregor is a UK based guitarist and 'mindmapping' singer-songwriter, recently named Guitarist of the Year at the British Blues Awards. A female guitar prodigy she studied guitar at Leeds College of Music and became the first student in the college’s history to achieve a 100% pass mark, with 18 distinctions and a first class honours. Since then she has built a loyal and growing fanbase with one critic saying “Chantel McGregor deserves to be held up as a messiah of blues-rock and given her own mountain. She doesn’t strum or pick her guitar but almost bends and distorts it, as if she’s channeling the ghost of Hendrix through her fingers”.

In this episode of The Creative Life Podcast Chantel tells us about how her dad encouraged and taught her to play guitar. She also talks about her experiences from doing jam sessions and the artists and songs that inspired her playing. Chantel shares with us her obsession with Stevie Nicks.

"If this is your dream go for it, but you have to be prepared to sacrifice everything to do it. It is hard work."

Have you ever experienced a creative flow state? That feeling when you lose a sense of time and are completely immersed in the activity you are doing,

Around 2000 years ago the philosopher Aristotle argued that the purpose of life is to be happy. Often when we are asked to described what happiness feels like we talk about this experience of being in flow what what we are doing.

In this episode of The Creative Life Podcast I talk with Tony Succar who was born into a family of talented musicians in Lima, Peru before moving to Miami, Florida when he was just two years old. Growing up in a household imbued with rhythm it was no surprise that at the tender age of 13, Tony began his own career as a musician, initially starting on piano before moving to percussion.

Since then he has worked with some of the greats of Latin music including Arturo Sandoval, Nestor Torres and Tito Puente Jr. You could say that Tony Succar lives a creative and polyrhythmic life, being the President of his own entertainment company as well as a bandleader, percussionist, producer, composer and arranger. His latest project Unity features more than 100 musicians and gives a Latin spin to the music of Michael Jackson.

Tony talks about the development of his project "Unity: The Latin Tribute To Michael Jackson album. He tells us about his mentors and teachers and how he fell in love with percussion. He also shares with us about him being a competitive person and having music as his passion and as his life.

"Talent is something that many people will have, but what's gonna separate you from the rest is your work ethic."

There are points in our lives when we need to make creative decisions, when we need to cut off one option to take up another. Making a creative decision can be like facing a crossroad and so how do we decide which road to go down?

In this episode of The Creative Life TV Show, I discuss a very useful model developed by the Grove Agency in San Francisco called "The Personal Compass Model". This helps us decide which road we should take when making those creative decisions in our lives.

How To Make Creative Decisions Show Notes:

Personal Compass Model

1. Where have you come from?
2. What is really important to you?
3. Who is important to you?
4. What has been holding you back?
5. What are you afraid of?

Olivia Tarplin is a Jersey City based academic, writer, researching and speaker on gender, politics, sexuality and the media. Focusing on the thriving industry of feminist pornography, she has spent the past 3 years studying how it can be used to change sexual culture and educate the masses about sex. A keen photographer, she initially considered studying photography but feared that an academic setting might spoil her love of the medium. Instead she chose to study Global Studies at The New School in New York which has led her onto the exciting work she does today.

In this episode of The Creative Life Podcast, Olivia tells us about her day job in a marketing firm in Manhattan, continuing her research on feminist pornography and sex education as well as researching more on feminist pornography and its relationship with economics. She talks to us about going to The New School to study psychology and she shares with us about attending a book reading at the Bluestockings Bookstore and getting hooked on the The Feminist Porn Book by Tristan Taormino.

"Ignore the ones that are completely ridiculous and comical and have no basis in reality."
