In this episode of The Creative Life Podcast, I talk with singer-songwriter-blogger, Amanda Palmer about how she juggles her music, activism, writing and new baby. Amanda tells us about protecting her son from social norms and nurturing his creative curiosity. She also shares with us the difference between her creative process as a songwriter and live music performer compared with that of her creative process when writing a book.

“The first stop on turning people onto your art is show people your art.” – Amanda Palmer

And on technology and mindfulness Amanda Palmer says:

“The most important thing about doing anything with a second screen, whether it’s a creative project, or watching a piece of media, watching a film, being with a friend and having your screen, is you have to be able to do it mindfully. You have to be able to know that you are in control and able to shut the screen off and be with yourself and by yourself when needed.”

AMANDA PALMER SHOW NOTES:

  • How motherhood has affected Amanda’s online writing
  • Gypsy lifestyle
  • Sharing and monetizing your art using Patreon
  • Second screen songwriting
  • The people behind the book “The Art Of Asking”
  • On recording, mixing and mastering her songs
  • Growing up
  • On building an audience and how to harness a platform like Patreon
  • Maria Popova of BrainPickings
  • Doing what inspires you each day

I was recently speaking with the Korean designer Jinsop Lee about design thinking. As he told me about his ‘five senses approach‘ to design thinking it got me thinking about how as creatives we can create much more immersive experiences.

In this episode of The Creative Life TV Show I talk about:

– The solar powered clock where you tell the time by smell
– Multi-sensory experiences
Heston Blumenthal restaurants
– Music festival design
– How great teachers use different modalities

In this episode of The Creative Life Podcast I talk with hacker turned cyber security expert, internationally celebrated speaker, researcher and author Keren Elazari. She talks about the positive phenomenon and ethical side of hacking and also shares with us how hacking has been adopted by the mainstream.

“I try to be inspired by the work of other people in my field or related to it.” – Keren Elazari

Show Notes:

  • Keren's involvement on a project called “PKI” and her belief that applying this concept in an enterprise environment would solve a lot of security problems that they were dealing with. Keren gave everything to it, but the concept failed in more than one way. She learned that sometimes having the best technical solution is not enough, and you really have to get the human solution.

We’ve heard the words bandied around by many corporations and individuals – creativity and innovation. But is there a difference between the two? Or are they just two sides of the same coin?

In this video, James Taylor explains the difference between the two terms, and gives a short history on why the two are often used to describe a new idea or product.

Is creativity a part of innovation? Or is it the other way around? Or are the two mutually interchangeable, dependent on context? Ultimately, are they just labels?

IN THIS EPISODE OF THE CREATIVE LIFE TV SHOW YOU’LL DISCOVER:

  • Why business executives don’t use the word Creativity
  • Creativity and the mindfulness revolution
  • The Creativity Framework

Do you consider and identify yourself as being a creative? In a recent study by Adobe they found that only 39% worldwide identified themselves as being creative.

I work with great experts to create online courses, retreats, workshops and live events. Something I have noticed from the attendees, is that they often want to get back to the creativity bug again after some major life event. But why is it that they wait until that major event before getting back to creating?

Picasso said “Every child is an artist. The problem is how to remain an artist once they grow up.”

In this episode I look at why so few people consider themselves creative and what we can do about it.

There are three buckets in your life – creating, communicating, consuming. The challenge is that it is really only possible to focus on two at any time.

If you are in the research stage of a creative project then you have to be consuming as much information as possible, but then there comes a time when you have to stop. You need to switch modes and move to creation mode.

Social media is an interesting one because it can trick you into thinking that you are actually doing all three.

In this episode of The Creative Life I dig into how to decide which of the three to focus on at the different stages of the creative process.
