In this episode of The Creative Life Podcast I talk with singer-songwriter Melissa Ferrick about the process of creative songwriting.

Melissa, an eight time Boston music award winner, is regarded as one of the most prolific and hard working artists in the business. Her 12th original album, a coming home and a self titled album, is in many ways a new beginning for Ferrick. Written in just over a year, recorded at home, it's out now on her newly relaunched label Right On Records.

We discuss the power of building a loyal fanbase of true fans and Melissa shares with us why accepting help is her biggest weakness and how she coped up.

In this episode of The Creative Life Podcast global disability inclusion strategist Debra Ruh talks about brainstorming, innovation and speaking at the UN.

When told by ‘experts’ that her daughter, Sara, who was born with Down’s Syndrome, would be lucky to push shopping carts at the local grocery store, Debra refused to accept this. Debra Ruh’s unshakable faith in the power of human potential first led her to create multi-million dollar IT firm Tec-Access, an ICT Accessibility firm with the majority of employees being technologists with disabilities.

After exiting that business she started Ruh Global, which focuses on Global Disability Inclusion, Digital Marketing and the implementation of the United Nations Convention on the Rights of Persons with Disabilities. She now consults with governments, corporations, NGO’s, and travels the world inspiring and encouraging others to follow their dreams. Her latest book is called “Tapping Into Hidden Human Capital: How Leading Companies Improve Their Bottom Line by Employing Persons with Disabilities”.

"I just don't let him stop me. I just walk right into him. I'm not gonna let anybody stop me including myself."

Today I talk with Charleston based rock and soul band Dead 27s about their creative process as musicians and crowd funding their recordings through Pledgemusic. Their new album Ghosts Are Calling Out is produced by Ben Ellman of funk/rock act Galactic and mixed by Mikael ‘Count’ Eldridge whose other credits include Radiohead and the Rolling Stones. Indie music magazine Jamsphere said of the band "Anyone who claims that rock and soul ain’t what it used to be clearly hasn’t heard of these stunning musicians. This will remind you of soul and blues from the late 60’s – with rock from the early 70’s. But probably the most compelling quality of the Dead 27s is how seamlessly they stay true to the pure, old school rock and soul sounds while making their music cutting edge and relevant to today’s listeners."

In this episode of The Creative Life Podcast, Dead 27 talk about their experiences of crowdfunding their music through Pledgemusic, how they all met and started playing music together and where they find ideas for their music.

"Overall in any development of any musician, you're gonna experience a lot of failure and that's kinda the key, to being able to accomplish what you want to is being able to step back and use whatever you feel as motivations and what drives you to achieve whatever you are trying to achieve."

"Bare down the road and keep your head up because it's gonna turn into a grind on some point. Just make sure you don't lose sight of why your doing this and it's actually something you love and it's a labor of love."

"Don't fear failure."

In this episode of The Creative Life Podcast I talk with Dr Noa Kageyama of The Bulletproof Musician on coping with stage fright.

Dr Noa Kageyama is a New York based performance psychologist and a former classical violinist. He has worked with everyone from music students from Juilliard to members of the US Armed Forces School of music. Noa's skill is being able to help talented musicians prepare for orchestra job auditions, understand performance enhancement and overcome performance anxiety.

" Simply saying 'I'm excited' and trying to attribute everything that you've experiencing to being excited because, you know we've all had performances where we really were excited and we had the butterflies and were nervous but it was also super exciting and our performance is finally well, just re-attributing what we were experiencing to excitement as suppose to fear or anxiety is one small thing that can be done, but also very impactful at the same time."

In this episode of The Creative Life TV Show I talk about the issue of 'creative imposter syndrome' and how it affects so many people today. Recently I was with one of my coaching clients, a very successful author and musician, and just before he went up on stage to play in front of thousands, he turned to me and said he felt like a fraud and unworthy of his success. In this episode I give you the advice that I gave to him on that day.

In this episode of The Creative Life TV Show I talk about how brainwriting can be a great way to generate new ideas from your team. Based on the 6-3-5 brainstorming technique developed in the late 60's it works especially well for introverts.

'Brainwriting' Show Notes:

  • 6-3-5 Technique
  • 6 Participants + Moderator
  • Define the problem to be solved
  • Each writes 3 ideas in 5 minutes
  • Pass to person on right
  • 6 rounds
  • 108 ideas in 30 minutes
  • Assures active participation, especially from introverts
  • Avoids people dominating the brainstorming session

Valerie Day is a Portland based pop and jazz singer and member of the Grammy nominated band NU SHOOZ which she founded with her husband John Smith. Valerie was born into a fourth generation of a musical Northwestern family and she was blessed to be raised amidst a supportive, arts-rich home life. A musical mother paved the way for a fantastic journey - from the ground-zero trajectory of 80’s pop chartdom with NU SHOOZ, to jazz, big-band and orchestral performances with the Oregon Symphony. Her musical collaborator and the founder of NU SHOOZ is John Smith who also joins us today. John is a prolific composer, writer and visual artist. As a composer he’s written hundreds of scores for film, commercials and modern dance. After more than a 27 year hiatus, with recognition of how important it is to show your work, NU SHOOZ is back with new album called ‘Bagtown’.

In this episode of The Creative Life Podcast Valerie and John talk about having NU SHOOZ as their primary directive right now. They also tell us about creating new music for the group and doing it full time. John also shares with us how he ended his medical career.

Are you pursuing the right goals in your life? Have you set goals that you feel excited about and which you are striving to achieve.

In this episode of The Creative Life TV I look at how to set SMART, PURE and CLEAR goals.

Transcript:

When I talk to creative people and ask them to describe their goals in their career and work, they often describe it to me in very vague way. More like dreams rather than goals.

When setting goals we have the  S.M.A.R.T, P.U.R.E and C.L.E.A.R goals.

S.M.A.R.T stands for S- Specific, M- Measurable, A - Attainable, R- Relevant and T-  Time based.

P.U.R.E stands for P - Pure, U- Understood, R - Relevant, E- Ethical.

C.L.E.A.R stands for C- Challenging,  L- Legal, E- Environmentally Sound, A- Agreed, R- Recorded.

The more of these components you can pick off when you set a goal and write that goal down the more likely you are to achieve it. You have to know clearly in your head what that goal is and to define it.

Coming up with really innovative ideas requires thinking outside the box, getting a bit uncomfortable in our thinking and pushing ourselves a little more in our thinking. Here's a short creativity exercise that you can try as a bit of fun. It is called 'The 9 Points Problem'.

Imagine we have 9 points up here on the screen. Looking at this now, imagine you have a pen . Try to join up the 9 points or 9 dots using only 4 straight lines and without your pen leaving the screen. How would you join all 9 points?
