There are points in our lives when we need to make creative decisions, when we need to cut off one option to take up another. Making a creative decision can be like facing a crossroad and so how do we decide which road to go down?

In this episode of The Creative Life TV Show, I discuss a very useful model developed by the Grove Agency in San Francisco called "The Personal Compass Model". This helps us decide which road we should take when making those creative decisions in our lives.

2. What is really important to you?
3. Who is important to you?

Why do we get our best ideas in the shower? In the morning your brain is half awake and half asleep, you are quite relaxed in that way and more open to unconventional thoughts. The alpha waves are rippling through your brain and your attention is often focused inwards.

Some other people also get their ideas by lying in the bath late at night, or when they are out walking in nature. All these things have one thing in common, they all have a relaxed state of mind, but not too relaxed.

We are entering an exciting new creative age in our history. According to Google in the next five years another three billion people are expected to come online for the very first time. These three billion people will be creating, learning, uploading, buying and selling online for the very first time.

Another recent study published at the World Economic Summit in Davos showed what the top ten most important job skills will be by the year 2020. It identified creativity as being in the top three skills, more important that negotiation skills or emotional intelligence. In this episode of The Creative Life TV Show I talk about how to take advantage of this new creative age.

In this episode of The Creative Life TV Show, I talk about how we often get fixated with the labels we give ourselves as creatives. "I am a writer, musician, artist, entrepreneur, etc". Srinavas Rao wrote an intriguing article about how creative cross-training can open up new possibilities. The idea is that you immerse yourself in another art form outside of your primary domain.

By experimenting with a different art form we get a different view of the world and engage mental muscles that may never have been engaged before. The result can often be a cross-fertilization of ideas and new creative inspiration.

I was recently speaking with the Korean designer Jinsop Lee about design thinking. As he told me about his ‘five senses approach‘ to design thinking it got me thinking about how as creatives we can create much more immersive experiences.

In this episode of The Creative Life TV Show I talk about:

– The solar powered clock where you tell the time by smell
– Multi-sensory experiences
Heston Blumenthal restaurants
– Music festival design
– How great teachers use different modalities

We’ve heard the words bandied around by many corporations and individuals – creativity and innovation. But is there a difference between the two? Or are they just two sides of the same coin?

In this video, James Taylor explains the difference between the two terms, and gives a short history on why the two are often used to describe a new idea or product.

Is creativity a part of innovation? Or is it the other way around? Or are the two mutually interchangeable, dependent on context? Ultimately, are they just labels?

IN THIS EPISODE OF THE CREATIVE LIFE TV SHOW YOU’LL DISCOVER:

  • Why business executives don’t use the word Creativity
  • Creativity and the mindfulness revolution
  • The Creativity Framework

Do you consider and identify yourself as being a creative? In a recent study by Adobe they found that only 39% worldwide identified themselves as being creative.

I work with great experts to create online courses, retreats, workshops and live events. Something I have noticed from the attendees, is that they often want to get back to the creativity bug again after some major life event. But why is it that they wait until that major event before getting back to creating?

Picasso said “Every child is an artist. The problem is how to remain an artist once they grow up.”

In this episode I look at why so few people consider themselves creative and what we can do about it.

There are three buckets in your life – creating, communicating, consuming. The challenge is that it is really only possible to focus on two at any time.

If you are in the research stage of a creative project then you have to be consuming as much information as possible, but then there comes a time when you have to stop. You need to switch modes and move to creation mode.

Social media is an interesting one because it can trick you into thinking that you are actually doing all three.

In this episode of The Creative Life I dig into how to decide which of the three to focus on at the different stages of the creative process.
